Newark seeks community input to revise its Master Plan
Planning for the future of Newark and its neighborhoods involves all of us – residents, government, nonprofits, and business. Newark’s Master Plan will be the official document that helps to guide the decisions we make about land uses, investments, preservation, and improvement – now and over the next 20 years. It’s your city and your future. The City of Newark, along with several community-based organizations, invites you to come out for the second round of community workshops!

Please check out the Master Plan website for more details and to find a listing of all workshops: http://www.newarkmasterplan.com/. See photos on our Facebook page, and local coverage of the first round of workshops at Patch.com.

Community Youth Mapping
Youth from the ages of 14-21 spent this past summer giving to their community by observing conditions in targeted neighborhoods throughout the city and giving input on how and where they would like to see change happen. See the Youth Mappers in action in this short video.
In just 8 weeks, the Youth Mappers charted the condition of 10,700 lots. The following maps plot the locations of abandoned and vacant properties in three target neighborhoods, which the City of Newark can use to plan neighborhood improvements with our Strong Healthy Communities Initiative and Master Plan partners.

Report: PENewark Forum on Barriers to Educational Success
On Dec. 15, 2010, the Center for Collaborative Change co-hosted a PENewark forum, along with co-sponsors Newark Now, 13th Avenue School, Essex County College–College Yes, New Jersey Community Capital, Jewish Renaissance Medical Center, and Lotus in Action. The forum was held at Thirteenth Avenue School in Newark, New Jersey, and was attended by a diverse group of participants, including Newark parents, students, educators, City officials, and members of the nonprofit, philanthropic, and business communities. Part of PENewark’s citywide community engagement campaign around education in Newark, the forum examined barriers to educational success in the community with a focus on health and healthcare, neighborhood conditions, public safety, and food access. The purpose of the forum was to draw out connections between neighborhood conditions and student educational success to be incorporated into the ongoing PENewark campaign and inform research and reforms going forward. You can download the Center’s forum report here.
Newark wins national $15M award to eliminate barriers to health and achievement for children and families.
“We are honored to be only of one of five cities across the nation to receive this prestigious award,” said Newark Mayor Cory Booker. “Thanks to the leadership of the Center for Collaborative Change and Prudential, this philanthropic investment will strengthen Newark’s Strong Healthy Communities Initiative which will empower our most vulnerable residents by providing them with the resources they need to overcome significant challenges. Together with our community partners, the neighborhood revitalization we achieve as a result of this initiative will help us continue to build a stronger, safer, and prouder Newark.”

The Integration Initiative:
Newark was recently selected as one of just ten finalists, five of which will receive $15M in blended capital over the next three years for a novel, integrated, multi-sector initiative of our collective design. In partnership with the Prudential Foundation, The Center for Collaborative Change has been selected as the lead coordinator and applicant for the initiative on behalf of the Newark team. Surveys, fall and winter.
In October, we surveyed over 500 Newark residents as part of our preliminary needs assessment. The results of the community survey are now available here.
A subsequent survey of similar design – open-ended questions designed to gather residents’ own words about their experiences and priorities, conducted person-to-person by other Newark residents – was on community-police relations. The first round results are here.
Would you please help us to disseminate the second round survey to your networks of Newark community members? Our goal is to get at least 2,000 responses to this survey, which asks for input on the biggest concerns that the first round highlighted.
